Expressive Art Therapy and Play Therapy Sessions is a form of psychotherapy and includes individual and group therapy sessions for ages 5 - 102 years old. Art therapy allows clients to engage with a variety of mediums that can assist with communication during a session. Clients can use toys, games, painting supplies, drawing supplies, the use of their body during dance and movement, and various other mediums in a session. Your art therapist will typically check in with you about which supplies and mediums you are most comfortable with and will prepare your sessions to reflect the use of said supplies. The use of lines, shapes, role playing, and colours can assist with memory recall and non-verbal communication that can facilitate the psychotherapy experience and assist with identifying problems and concerns, come up with goals, and collaborate on strategies to help with progress in sessions. Art and play supplies will be included in in-person sessions, but are not included in online sessions.

Hello!

My name is Marya Mazhar, and I am a licensed social worker. My journey into social work began with my experience of having non-judgmental support from a social worker who provided strategies to achieve realistic goals that benefited me. It led to a powerful realization of how a compassionate ear and supportive guidance can impact someone’s life. That is why I wanted to become a social worker, and it is a privilege to be that source of support for individuals navigating life’s challenges.

I have nearly a decade’s experience as a social service worker for a community agency that provides programs and services for new immigrants, refugees, and newcomers in North Etobicoke. I have worked with youth and adults and provided in both individual and parent-child interactions support. Furthermore, I have planned, organized, and executed youth workshops and programs that have contributed to creating a sense of community, agency, and safety for youth and served as an alternative space when they required support outside their school and home. Working from a community perspective has been a rewarding experience.

I believe in a collaborative and strengths-based approach to therapy, tailoring my methods to meet each client’s unique needs. I draw from evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), narrative therapy, motivational interviewing, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) to foster a supportive and healing environment.

I have completed an Honours BSc in Psychology and Exceptionality & Giftedness at the University of Toronto, as well as my Masters Level Diploma in Art Therapy at the Toronto Art Therapy Institute.

I believe providing a safe and non-judgmental space where the client is given space to express who they are and how their values, thoughts, and behaviours align is vital in therapy. I enjoy collaborating with clients during therapy sessions in order to provide support and strategies that allows them to have a personalized experience suited to their needs and goals.

During my time as an Art Therapist Candidate, I have introduced Art Therapy programs at several locations, including the Long-Term Care units at Milton District Hospital and Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital; at Nisa Homes for Women and Children; and at NRIO Etobicoke (formerly Bayshore Healthcare). I have worked with individuals aged 3 to 102 years old who have presented with varying mental health needs.

I am certified in: - Neurorehabilitation in Assisiting Individuals Living with Brain Injuries; - Specialized Autism Training for Mental Health Providers; and - ASIST Suicide Intervention.

I am trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based (Art) Therapy, CBT, DBT, Narrative Therapy, Play Therapy, Emotional Focused Therapy, and I am currently training in Gottman Couple’s Therapy.

During my free time I enjoy spending time with loved ones and engaging in creative and mindful tasks. I also enjoy reading, playing video games, and painting, and spending time in nature. I have exhibited my artwork at locations such as The Spinal Cord Injury of Ontario and Nuit Blanche 2017.
